Obtaining a US student visa can be a daunting task to those unfamiliar with the process. If one understands the system, however, and applies as early as possible and makes the necessary preparations, a properly qualified applicant should have no problems!

GRE: Will the old format remain the same?
Here is a simple 6-step procedure for obtaining a US study visa:

Step 1 -- Receive your I-20 form from your US university. Any US university that admits you and wishes you to enrol will send a SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) generated Form I-20. This form is a United States Department of Homeland Security document issued by colleges, universities, and vocational schools that provides supporting information for the issuance of your F-1 student visa. It will be signed by the appropriate university personnel; you should also sign the document.

Step 2 -- Go on Visa Facilitation Services web site and click on the blue link stating 'HDFC Bank' in the middle of the page. It will take you to a listing of HDFC branches that accept US visa fees throughout India; some branches do not accept US visa fees. Find the one nearest to you and make a trip to the bank! Please carry a photocopy of the first page of your passport.

The fees to be paid at HDFC Bank per passport are:

1. Visa Application Fee (MRV Fee): $100 in Indian Rupee equivalent at consular rate of exchange. Rupee amount at current rate of exchange (Rs 46/1USD) is Rs 4,600/-

This fee is payable in cash or by DD/HDFC Bank cheque favouring "US Embassy -- Visa Fees" or "American Consulate General -- Mumbai or Chennai or Kolkata". DDs issued by cooperative banks are not accepted.

2. Service Charge: Rs 322, which includes Visa Facilitations Services charge of Rs 310 and Bank service charge Rs 12.

This fee is payable in cash or by DD/HDFC Bank cheque favouring "HDFC Bank a/c VFS". DDs issued by cooperative banks are not accepted.

The fee receipt gets activated two working days from date of issue. Do not attempt to make your visa appointment until these two days have passed. The above fees are not refundable. You must appear for an interview within 1 year (365 days) from the date you purchased your fee receipt from HDFC Bank. If you do not appear for an interview within one year after the purchase of your fee receipt, it will no longer be valid. The receipt is deemed as 'utilised' once the interview has occurred; a 'utilised' receipt cannot be used to make a subsequent appointment.

Step 3 -- Now is the time to practise filling the three Department of State forms necessary for your visa application. Go to an immigration portal called http://www.ilw.com/ and click 'immigration forms' on the navigation bar on the left-hand side of the site. In the list, look for these three forms: DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158; download them and fill them as practice rehearsal. You can consult experts for their opinions. The seemingly easy forms relay vital information about you to the Visa Officer, who reads them carefully to make judgments on visa issuance; it is therefore of paramount importance to practise and master these forms.

Step 4 -- Now, you are ready to apply for an interview date and fill out your Department of State forms on the Visa Facilitation Services website -- http://www.vfs-usa.co.in/. Click on the 'apply for a Non-immigrant visa' link. Select that you are 'seeking visa for studying' and a calendar of the current month will be visible showing dates marked with green or grey colour; dates in green indicate availability for interviews. Click on your date of preference. If you wish to interview at a later date, you can see future months by clicking the right arrow. After you select the date and enter your HDFC receipt details, the three DS forms will appear which you have to fill online. The DS-156 must be the March 2006 date, electronic 'e-form application'. Since you have downloaded the forms and practised filling them, you will be comfortable with the format. Some of the boxes in the forms may not take all the data due to space crunch; you must abbreviate your answer accordingly. Do not leave any box blank; write None or Nil or NA instead of leaving blanks (when appropriate).
Step 5 -- Go to http://www.fmjfee.com/ in order to submit and pay for the Form I-901. This form is your application for SEVIS (Student Exchange and Visitor Information System), which is a web-based system designed to link every US consulate with every US port of entry and all 74,000 educational institutions eligible to host foreign students. The fee is $100 dollars and can be made with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express); a receipt will be issued to you on the same web site which should be printed and taken along for the US visa interview.

Step 6 -- You must carry the following mandatory documents at the time of the interview:

1. Passport, visa fee receipt issued by HDFC Bank and interview appointment letter.

2. SEVIS generated Form I-20 in original, approved and signed by the University authority.

3. Proof of payment of SEVIS Form I-901.

4. Evidence of financial resources -- proof of liquid assets sufficient to pay for the entire first year of education and living expenses as well as proof of readily available funds to cover the remaining year(s) of studies. You are allowed to cite the financial information of your parents as evidence. In addition, you can use a relative sponsor from India or from the US. A US-based sponsor can send an Affidavit of Support (Form I-134) to you to carry for the interview.

5. Original Bachelor degree transcripts or high school diploma along with mark sheets from previous institutions attended.

6. Relevant entrance exam test scores, e.g. TOEFL and SAT, GRE, GMAT or LSAT.

7. A "passport" photograph -- 2 by 2 inches -- with your head centred in the frame. Side or angled views are not acceptable. The photo may be in colour or black and white, but must have a white or off-white background.

Interview tips

Go to the interview well-groomed, neither too casual nor overly formal
You should arrive to the consulate approximately 15 minutes early.
Your body language should give the impression of self-confidence; answer questions naturally and directly without nervousness.
Emphasize your genuine desire to study in America along with your commitment to return to India because of familial and financial ties.
Above all else, smile!

Post  Admin Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:42 am

i can add on the tips , but just to point out i did not come here on a student visa but it should be the same

u said be well groomed and dress well not to formal not to casual...
i say go as formal as possible, there is no minus marks if u look smart , pls do not wear slippers and a salwar ladies, remember this is a foreign country and they will judge you based on they're culture not ours. First impression is a strong one.

Keep your answers minimum to a yes or a no, if asked something talk to the point, and no one is impressed if your mother or father are millionaires and have all the contacts in the world..

when i got off the plane in new york i saw a woman being detained from something and she kept telling them her contacts and stories, all the security said is " lady were not the police, were the goverment " remember that.

also do read the website inside out in terms of what to get and what to do , they like organized people.. they almost denied me my visa but i caught them on the point they were trying to deny it to me and they accepted it, once again this was only because i had god on my side i do not encourage u to back answer and show you are smarter in that booth.... life in the united states is diff from india you do not get your work done by screaming and howling, if you are entitled no one can deny you here, also in america indians are considered smart, rich cultured people , keep that name up.

be confident that is all, i was in and out in 5 min.

US visa steb by step proceure Empty MY experiences!!

Post  Admin Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:43 am

Yeah this
information seems nice to begin things for the visa process!! Seems things are in order, the rate pointed out Rs.46 per dollar seems to fluctuate but thats just for the information.
But want to add some fine points for better Visa process. Really fine Consultant points.

I want to add that the total expenses shown in your financial papers should not be only for one year. But it should be approximately, 1.5 times (minimum)(underline) the total fees mentioned on the I20 form which includes both living expenses and of course fees.(/underline)

This total amount can be shown in any combination. Like your loan approved from the bank, your personal family assets in the account, both parents if required, along with PF or some other LIQUID assets for your fees.
[bold]Please see[/bold] Andhra bank is not considered safe for any kind of such loan approval letters. Some people get loans from the cooperative banks, i am afraid thats not desirable too. Although such things have worked for few people.

you can also use your parents PF(provident fund savings too). You do not have to withdraw any money from the PF. But simply get the letter stating that this much amount (generally 80% of the total amount), is available at your disposal for the child's education in US. This thing is important for the families as money once withdrawn from PF can not be returned back into PF. (not all families might desire it, as you get higher interest rate in PF and more secure it is).

All these are nitty gritties. And am sure i ll post more for the Financial process.

I have some more info to add to it!!

I forgot ....
to stress on Gary's statements. He is an experienced fella and indeed his experiences do enhance your views about the ways to tackle intricate details. Those are Social Nitty Gritties he is referring to.
My friend had total assets to the tune of 1 crores+, but her visa was rejected.
Although, you never know what was the real reason of rejection. But yeah carrying yourself and understanding those little fine points always helps.

It is always good to score on all intricate points and attributes, and not like you can compensate bad attributes with some excellent attributes. The idea is to have many good points and not even ONE bad attribute. This will add good to your overall total attributes and you will be flying high in US.. soon pretty soon.

My best wishes to all of you who are applying for Visa to Fall 2009 session.
